Clockwork Drawing Machine

This investigation was the beginning phase for the 270 Park Avenue Deconstruction project. The process involved finding an antique object that could be easily disassembled to create a drawing machine. Using a specific amount and type of material to create a particular sculptural yet functional product was the end goal, with reverseengineering being the main technique used. In looking at the radial nature of the clock antique chosen, it became apparent that this radial nature would lend itself for use in a drawing machine. The final product is used to create radial patterns on paper, leaving specific registration marks. The cogs on the clock gears leave variations of dashed lines, varying thickness as the machine progresses. In translation to architectural format, this project allowed the exploration of specific contexts and the use of materials and frameworks into entirely new compositions.
